Hans-Werner Meuer

Hans-Werner Meuer (born June 7, 1936 ; † January 20, 2014 in Daisbach ) was a German mathematician and computer scientist , professor at the University of Mannheim and co-founder of the International Supercomputing Conference and the TOP500 rankings.

Life

Meuer studied mathematics, physics and political science at the Philipps University of Marburg and the Justus Liebig University of Gießen and in Vienna . In 1962 he completed his studies in Giessen with a state examination. During his research at Forschungszentrum Jülich , he received his doctorate in applied mathematics from RWTH Aachen University in 1972 . Since 1974 he has been a professor of computer science at the University of Mannheim.

Meuer was married and had three sons, Andreas, Martin and Thomas.

He died in January 2014 of complications from cancer.

Services

In 1986 Meuer founded the "Supercomputer Seminar". This was continued from 2001 under the name International Supercomputing Conference .

Together with Erich Strohmaier and Jack Dongarra , he began to compile the TOP500 ranking list of the most powerful computers in 1993 . This was initially called "Mannheim Supercomputer Statistics".

In a lot of research he devoted himself to the topics of data processing and large computers.
