Hans-Werner Wiermann

Hans-Werner Wiermann (born February 20, 1958 in Soltau ) is a lieutenant general in the Bundeswehr and since July 11, 2019 Director General of the NATO International Military Staff at NATO headquarters .

Life

Wiermann joined the German Armed Forces in 1976 and was trained as a maintenance officer. He studied electrical engineering and communications engineering at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg . From 1988 to 1990 he trained as an officer in the general staff service at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg. In 1990 he became General Staff Officer for Logistics (G4) of the 1st Panzer Division in Hanover . In 1993 he was trained at the British Army Staff College in Camberley .

In 1994, Wiermann became a consultant in the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) for arms control and the Chemical Weapons Convention and subsequently worked at the Foreign Office in the field of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe .

In 1997 Wiermann became battalion commander of the 410 repair battalion in Beelitz , which was again followed by lecturing activities. In 2002 he became adjutant of the then General Inspector of the Bundeswehr , Wolfgang Schneiderhan . In 2004 Wiermann switched to the military policy department at the BMVg, where he was most recently the first deputy head.

From January 2013, Wiermann was commander of the Territorial Tasks Command of the Bundeswehr . He handed over this function to Brigadier General Jürgen Knappe on July 23, 2015 . He then became German military representative on the military committees of NATO and the EU until he took up his current post .
