Habilitation thesis

Anger's 675-page habilitation thesis “Problems of the German University” (1960) is considered to be his main work. 138 professors at the universities of Bonn, Frankfurt, Heidelberg and Kiel were surveyed. The font offers an inside view of the post-war universities with an abundance of original citations. It was used for many years in university policy discussions. From today's perspective, the survey results contain a high degree of repression and stereotyping in the thinking of the professors of the time. One of the themes of the scriptures was the role of women in the university. Anger also occupied himself with this topic in later years.

The Cologne Institute

Anger received a call to the Cologne Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. There he built the first university institute for social psychology in Germany. He taught there from 1962 until his retirement . The institute had good staffing facilities and the possibilities for experimental research were exceptionally good for the time due to the existing test rooms, equipment, library, etc. Anger worked on small group research, reference groups , the history of social psychology and research methods in social psychology. He was a founding member of the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology (today: European Association of Social Psychology ).
