Hans Bauer (biologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Gustav Emil Bauer (born September 27, 1904 in Hamburg ; † January 5, 1988 there ) was a German biologist and geneticist .

Life

Hans Bauer received his doctorate summa cum laude from Alfred Kühn in Göttingen in 1931 . Until 1932 he had an unpaid internship at the Hamburg Institute for Marine and Tropical Diseases . From 1933 he was assistant to Max Hartmann at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Berlin-Dahlem. In July 1933, Bauer joined the SS . Emil Heitz , social democratic, and his co-author Bauer succeeded in proving in 1933 that the giant loops in large cell nuclei represent polytene chromosomes . Bauer founded the magazine Chromosoma and served as its editor for many years. The first issue appeared in 1939. In 1940, he took over from Max Hartmann's department in Berlin-Dahlem. The Kaiser Wilhelm Society appointed Bauer a scientific member in 1942. Because of the war, the Bauer department was relocated to Hechingen in 1943, from where it was relocated to Wilhelmshaven in 1948 , to the new Max Planck Institute for Marine Biology . Bauer, appointed professor in 1950, became deputy director in 1955 and director of the institute in 1961. In 1960, the Senate of the Max Planck Society decided to relocate the Bauer Department to Tübingen , near the Max Planck Institute for Biology there. “The work carried out in the department relates without exception to questions of chromosome research.” From 1961, Bauer was chairman of the Scientific Council of the Max Planck Society. The Leopoldina Academy elected him a member in 1964. In 1961 he was awarded the Schleiden Medal .
