Hans Beck (archaeologist)

Hans Beck (born December 12, 1909 in Milan ; † September 3, 1987 in Munster ) was a German prehistorian and geologist . Beck worked mainly in the Sauerland and Siegerland and led numerous excavation projects. His research focus was primarily on research into the Central European Bronze and Iron Ages .

Life

After studying geology, mineralogy and prehistory in Stuttgart and Kiel , Beck received his doctorate in 1934 on the Flechtinger mountain range . Beck initially worked at the Geological Institute at Kiel University and in 1936 became an assistant at the State Museum for Prehistory and Early History (today: LWL Museum for Art and Culture ) in Münster. He researched the Latène period population in the greater Sauerland and Siegerland areas, and from 1928 he was involved in setting up the State Office for Cultural and Historical Soil Antiquities (today: State Office for Monument Preservation Hesse ) in Wiesbaden. From 1939 to 1960, with one interruption in the years 1941-1946 (military service and imprisonment), he took over the management of the newly created branch office for monument preservation in the Arnsberg administrative region .

Beck's research on the ramparts and the findings of the bronze urn from Gevelinghausen from the 9th-8th centuries. Century BC BC made him known in professional circles. From 1960 onwards Beck was director of the State Museum for Prehistory and Early History and took on the office of state shop steward for cultural and historical soil antiquities in the area of ​​the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association. Beck was active in several associations and commissions, for example from 1947 to 1987 as a member of the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia and from 1961 as a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Roman-Germanic Commission . From 1967 he was second chairman of the Northwest German Association for Ancient Studies.
