Hans Bernhard Schiff

Hans Bernhard Schiff (pseudonym: Wolfgang Geyse ; born March 20, 1915 in Berlin ; † September 10, 1996 in Saarbrücken ) was a German author.

Life

Schiff grew up in a bourgeois family, his uncle was Reich Foreign Minister Walter Rathenau . He passed his Abitur in 1934 in Halle (Saale) . Before completing his studies, Schiff left Germany with his family, then studied for a few years in London and Geneva and then took up a position as a teacher in Provence in 1943 . When he came to Saarbrücken in 1947 as Jean Bernard Schiff, he took a position as a teacher. A year later he was appointed head of the literature department of Saarland Radio , where he had previously worked as a translator. In 1956, Schiff switched back to the profession of teacher at a Saarbrücken secondary school.

For many years he was chairman of the Saar Regional Association of the Association of German Writers . The Hans-Bernhard-Schiff Literature Prize of the City of Saarbrücken, endowed with € 5000, is named after Hans-Bernhard Schiff .

Schiff's work is shaped by the confrontation with Friedrich Nietzsche and his own painful experiences of persecution, exile and the collapse of the European canon of values ​​by the National Socialists and the Second World War .
