Hans Alfred Beutler (born May 3, 1913 in Büren an der Aare ; † January 27 or 28, 1994 there ) was a Swiss artist and graphic designer. He worked closely with the Red Cross and helped save thousands of Jews from the Holocaust during World War II .

biography

His father was a bicycle mechanic and his mother came from a French Huguenot family . He went to school in Büren, after which he completed his apprenticeship as a graphic designer in French-speaking Switzerland.

He designed drawings for the series of postcards published in 1939, 600 Years of the Battle of Laupen , which made him famous.

Due to his successful work in 1942 as head of an internment camp for young people in Ticino, he was asked by the Children's Aid of the Swiss Red Cross to take over a children's home as a delegate in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in France. He arrived there in 1943. From 1942, on the initiative of the local pastor André Trocmé , his wife Magda and other citizens, the congregation accepted Jews who were threatened with deportation to the concentration camps. They were housed in residents' homes, in the surrounding farms and even in public buildings. In the Chambon-sur-Lignon area, 3,000 to 5,000 people were saved from certain death in the camps through the commitment of their residents. In 1990 the Israeli government recognized the region as " Righteous Among the Nations ".

After the war, Beutler returned to Switzerland in 1956, where he continued to work for the Red Cross and youth work.

The Hans Beutler Foundation was established in Liestal in 1987 and is based in Bubendorf BL . His crib collection , picture book collection and toy collection are managed and exhibited .
