life and work

Hans Christian Broholm-Hansen was the son of the veterinarian and farmer Hans Peter Hansen (1864–1918) and Laurine Petrine Marie born. Jørgensen (1863-1950). He attended grammar school (Katedralskole) in Odense and studied history and classical philology (Greek and Latin) at the University of Copenhagen from 1912 to 1919 . Among his academic teachers were the philologist and science historian Johan Ludvig Heiberg (1854–1928) and the archaeologist Christian Blinkenberg (1863–1948), who decisively promoted his scientific interests. A job at the Danish National MuseumBroholm got in Copenhagen on January 1, 1919, initially as an employee in the 1st department, after the master's examination in the rank of sub-inspector (from October 1, 1919). He spent his entire career at this museum.

His initial research focus was the archeology of the Mediterranean. After relevant publications, Broholm undertook a long study trip to Italy in 1926 as a scholarship holder of the Svenska Institutet i Rome . After his return, his focus of interest and work shifted more and more to prehistory and early history , especially to the Bronze Age , due to his professional activity . In 1930 he undertook an extensive research trip through northern Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Turkey, as the fruit of which his studies on the Younger Bronze Age ( Studier over den yngre Bronzealder ) appeared in 1933 . For this work, the University of Copenhagen awarded him a doctorate (Dr. phil.) Without an oral examination.

Broholm was promoted to 2nd inspector at the National Museum in 1931 and 1st inspector in 1936. From the 1930s onwards, he became increasingly involved in national and international cooperation between prehistorians and archaeologists. In 1934 he became a member of the Oldskrift-Selskabs Oldsagsafdeling and permanent advisory board of the International Archaeological Congress. In 1936 the German Archaeological Institute elected him as a corresponding member. In 1937 he took part in the preparation of an international Nordic museum congress. In 1941 he received the title of Museum Councilor. During the Second World War , he and many other Danish scholars resigned from the German Archaeological Institute in 1942.

Broholm was also an honorary member of the Polish Prehistoric Society in Poznan and a long-term member of the Holberg Society (Vice Chairman 1947–1953, President 1953–1959). In 1959 at the latest, he was back at the German Archaeological Institute, now as a full member. In 1965 Broholm retired from the National Museum.

Broholm dealt with all aspects of prehistoric culture as far as they can be recorded from archaeological finds. He wrote technical and popular scientific presentations that ranged from the Paleolithic to Roman times . The main focus of his work was the Bronze Age bait finds and clothing from the Bronze Age, on which he worked intensively with the textile historian Margrethe Hald .
