Hans Christian Hansen (born April 20, 1803 in Copenhagen , Denmark ; † May 2, 1883 in Vienna , Austria ) was a Danish builder .

Life

He was the eldest of six children of violinist and insurance employee Rasmus Hansen Braathen (1774-1824) from Eiker ( Viken , Norway ) and Sophie Elisabeth Jensen from Nyboder near Copenhagen. His brother was the architect Theophil von Hansen (1813-1891). Hansen married Theresia Verbiz (1831–1889) from Präwald in der Krain in 1857 , daughter of Mathias Vebiz and Maria Waj.

Hansen's role models included his compatriot Christian Frederik Hansen , who was not related to him and was the most important pioneer of the classicist style in northern Europe, influenced by ancient Roman architecture . However, like his brother Theophil, Hansen oriented himself more towards ancient Greece and even built in Athens himself. He was the court architect of the Greek King Otto (1815–1867).

Together with his architect colleague Eduard Schaubert (1804-1860) he rebuilt the Niketempel on the Acropolis in the 1830s on behalf of the archaeologist and conservator Ludwig Ross (1806-1859) . His most important structures include the main building of the University of Athens (construction period 1839–1864), the Lloyd arsenal in Trieste (1853–1861) and the city hospital in Copenhagen (1859–1863) and the Zoological Museum (1863–1869).

Like his brother Theophil later, Hansen was a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art .

Although Hansen died while visiting Vienna in 1883, Hansen was buried in Denmark.
