Hans Gaffron
Hans Gaffron (born May 17, 1902 in Lima , Peru , † August 18, 1979 in Falmouth , Massachusetts ) was a German-born biochemist . He was the son of the German doctor Eduard Gaffron and his wife Hedwig von Gevekot.
He studied in Berlin ; his doctoral supervisor was Wilhelm Traube . Gaffron was one of the most outstanding experts in photosynthesis and the biochemical processes of plant metabolism . One of his potentially most important achievements was the discovery of the hydrogen-producing properties of the green alga in a nitrogen- isolated environment. This discovery ( hydrogen bioreactor ) could be used today to produce hydrogen as an energy carrier and is therefore being studied by research institutions worldwide.
