Hans Gudewerdt (III)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Gudewerdt (* 1639/1640 in Eckernförde ; † after 1709 (not in Eckernförde)) was a German carver .

Live and act

Hans Gudewerdt was the son of a carver of the same name and his wife Christine. He had a brother named David, with whom he studied in his father's workshop. The town register of the city of Eckernförde recorded him in 1663 with the information that he was 23 years old. On February 21, 1664 both passed the journeyman's examination. After the death of his father, he continued his workshop as a master from 1671. For this he would have had to undertake a three-year wandering, from which he bought himself free. On November 18, 1673 he married Anna Maria Bock (buried on July 13, 1703 in Eckernförde), with whom he had four daughters.

In 1674 Gudewerdt took the church money. In 1697 he moved into the cutting office as an elderly man . According to the Eckernförde church records, he was a godfather twenty-four times and his wife ten times. From 1700 he had increasing financial problems. After 1709 there is no information about a further activity in Eckernförde. He probably left his house and left town. It is assumed that he moved to his brother Cyriacus Gudewerdt (also: Silaiakus G. ), who had studied theology and was then pastor in Sehestedt from 1693 until his death in 1736 .

Works

Altar in Borby

Gudewerdt took over a renowned workshop from his father, which received many orders and often worked for the Duke of Gottorf . Gudewerdt made six triumphal chariots for the courtyard in 1672, which no longer exist today. In 1681 he designed a new prospectus for the organ of St. Nicolai based on the model of a no longer existing organ in the St. George and Mauritius Church in Flemhude . This prospectus was probably replaced by a new building in 1762. Presumably he also created the pulpit of the Dänischenhagener church (today in the Preetz monastery ) and in 1686 the altar of the Borbyer church . However, there is no reliable evidence of this.
