Hans Hammer (pastor)

Hans Hammer (born February 21, 1931 in Amberg ) is a German Roman Catholic clergyman and book author. For his extraordinary services to his pastoral work during the Islamic Revolution , he received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class from Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker .

Life and work

Hans Hammer was born on February 21, 1931 in Amberg and grew up in Hirschau . He attended the high school in Amberg (today Gregor-Mendel-Gymnasium ) and graduated from high school in 1951. He then studied theology and philosophy in Regensburg and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1957. He then worked as a chaplain in Grafenwöhr until 1959 . In September 1959 he was appointed chaplain of the parish Döbling St. Paul by Cardinal König in Vienna and was supposed to prepare himself for training as a European pastor. From 1963 to 1974 he taught as a religion teacher at the commercial vocational school in Regensburg. During the eleven years he made study trips to the Ukraine , Russia , Siberia , Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as well as the United States . As a tourist chaplain, he gained experience in Spain and Italy .

In September 1974 he became the Catholic Foreign Office Bonn as foreign minister appointed to Tehran. There he was responsible for the German-speaking Catholics in Iran. Until 1980 he was responsible for teaching at the German Meeting School in Tehran and the 14 major construction sites throughout Iran as well as for pastoral care for the prisoners and sick in the area of ​​the megapolis of Tehran. After the Islamic Revolution , Iran's economic relations with the West fell apart. Most of the Germans then left Iran. Hammer returned with them from 1980 to 1983 to Regensburg, where he again worked as a religion teacher at the commercial vocational school. From 1983 he devoted himself again to pastoral care abroad. From Istanbul he not only looked after Turkey, but also Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, the Gulf States and the Sultanate of Oman. Until 1994 he was entrusted with setting up German-speaking pastoral care with branches in Istanbul, Ankara, Tehran, Baghdad, Mosul, Basra, Kuwait, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Muscat. Pastor Hammer not only visited the parishes, but also the construction sites in Iraq with large camps on the Tigris and in the entire area from the Syrian border to Basra in the Mesopotamia between the Euphrates and Tigris and in the Kurdish region.

In 1994 he returned to Germany. There he worked from 1994 to 2004 as a pastor in the parish of Schambach . In 2004 he retired and has lived in Freudenberg ever since . There he helps as a retired priest in the parish of Wutschdorf and the Etsdorf branch.

Act

Between 1967 and 1974 in particular, Hans Hammer worked hard to achieve understanding between Germans and Czechs.

In 1978/79 he experienced the Islamic Revolution , the overthrow of the Shah and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. In 1987, Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class, for his extraordinary merits in his pastoral work during the revolution .

There is a 28-minute film about him with the title "Hans Hammer - Priest under the Crescent", which shows him caring for German Christians in the Middle East and which is recommended for intercultural education.
