Hans Heyerdahl

Hans Heyerdahl (born July 8, 1857 in Smedjebacken , Sweden , † October 10, 1913 in Kristiania, today Oslo ) was a Norwegian painter .

Life

Heyerdahl grew up in Drammen , attended the art school in Oslo in 1873 and from 1874 studied together with Eilif Peterssen at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , his teachers were Ludwig von Löfftz and Lindenschmit the Younger .

His talent has already been reflected in numerous academy awards. At the world exhibition in Paris in 1878 he received the gold medal for his picture Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise . Heyerdahl worked in Paris from 1878 to 1882 and was influenced by plein air painting as a student of Léon Bonnat . Another major work, The Dying Child , was bought by France in 1882. The award of this picture with the Grand Prix of Florence enabled him to go on a study trip to Italy (1882–84), where he had contact with Arnold Böcklin .

In Oslo and Åsgårdstrand he was in contact with Christian Krohg and the young Edvard Munch . He is an important representative of Norwegian realism . After the turn of the century he opened up to Pan-Germanism .

He was a great-grandson of the Norwegian lawyer and Greenland inspector Johan Friedrich Schwabe (1749-1821).
