Johannes Stefanus Joseph (Hans) Hillen (born June 17, 1947 in The Hague ) is a Dutch politician of the Christian Democratisch Appèl (CDA). He was defense minister in the Rutte I cabinet and campaigned for strong national defense in close alliance with NATO .

Life

His father was a professional soldier. He studied sociology at the University of Utrecht and held various offices before becoming a politician. Among other things, he was a (sports) journalist at the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS), teacher and civil servant. In his last position in the 1980s he was the spokesman for Finance Minister Onno Ruding and defended his extensive restrictions.

In 1990 he was elected to the second chamber of the Dutch parliament and remained a member until 2002. In 2003 he became chairman of the CVZ Health Council and then moved to the first chamber in 2007. Here he was active until his appointment as defense minister on October 14, 2010 From 2005 to 2010 he was also a member of the board of the employers' association VNO-NCW .

On November 22, 2010, Hillen admitted through his spokesman that he had a part-time job at British American Tobacco during his time as a member of the First Chamber. At that time, a smoking ban was dealt with. Hillen said he had "forgotten" the mandatory reporting of his part-time job.

Hans Hillen is married and lives in Hilversum . He belongs to the Roman Catholic Church.
