Hans Jürgen Ehlers

Hans Jürgen Ehlers (born December 10, 1926 in Leipzig ; † July 24, 2013 in Stuttgart ) was a German bookseller. He is considered the inventor of the International Standard Book Number , abbreviated to ISBN.

Life

He was the son of the director of the Teubner Verlag and his wife, who worked for the same publisher as the head of the school book department, and was born in the Teubnerhaus on Leipziger Poststrasse. He first made his Abitur at the Thomas School in Leipzig and then began as a book printing trainee at Teubner. In addition to his training as a book retailer in London, Paris and Stuttgart, he studied philosophy, education and English in Heidelberg, Munich and Oxford. In 1954 he received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen, where he became a member of the student association AV Igel .

While he worked at Klett Verlag as a specialist in rationalization, data processing and new media from 1955 to 1986 , he introduced the punch card system and IT there. He also developed the methodology of the ISBN system, which he presented to the international public in 1966. In addition to his job, he was involved in the German Book Trade Association and in international book trade organizations.

For inventing the ISBN, he was honored with the Golden DIN Badge of Honor in 1975, the Golden Needle of the Börsenverein in 1987 and the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 2006.
