Hans J. Schütz

Hans Jürgen Schütz (born September 4, 1936 in Wilhelmshaven ; † July 10, 2004 in Bremen ) was a German translator and writer. Along with Margaret Carroux and Wolfgang Krege, he was part of the "triumvirate of the great German Tolkien translators"

Life

Schütz studied German and English in Marburg an der Lahn . From 1968 to 1971 he completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller and then worked from 1972 to 1975 as a publishing editor. Since 1976 he has worked as a freelance writer, journalist and translator. He died in Bremen in 2004 . Hans J. Schütz was married to the publisher Ida Schöffling in his first marriage and to the librarian Dagmar Schütz-Ködding in his second marriage.

Schütz was a permanent employee of the Börsenblatt and a member of the PEN .

As a translator, he has translated more than 30 works of fiction, biographies, books for young people and non-fiction from English and American into German, etc. a. for the publishers Rowohlt , S. Fischer , Ravensburger , CH Beck and Klett-Cotta Verlag, including authors such as Philip Kerr , Tad Williams and Patricia A. McKillip . In his literary work, Schütz specialized in depictions of literary censorship and topics from German literary history. The works of JRR Tolkien and various representations for its reception and explanation take up a large part of his translation work .
