Hans Jelmoli

Hans Jelmoli (born January 17, 1877 in Zurich ; † May 6, 1936 in Zurich) was a Swiss composer and pianist.

Life

Hans Jelmoli came from a Swiss family who founded the Jelmoli company and department store of the same name in Switzerland. He received musical training from Bernhard Scholz , Iwan Knorr and Engelbert Humperdinck at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt . He received piano lessons from Ernst Engesser . From 1898 to 1899 he was the third conductor at the Stadttheater Mainz and from 1899 to 1900 as the second conductor at the Stadttheater Würzburg . After returning to Zurich, Jelmoli worked there as a pianist, composer and music critic (1906 to 1911 for the Zürcher Post ). In 1907 he married Martha Henggeler. In 1920 Hans Jelmoli became a member of the selection committee of the Zurich Music Academy.

As a piano soloist, accompanist or chamber musician, Jelmoli has performed successfully in Switzerland and abroad. Thanks to extensive language skills, he was able to translate opera libretti for composer colleagues.

As a composer, Jelmoli wrote numerous stage and drama music (including Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors or Büchner's Leonce and Lena ) and several operas (including his legacy and Prince Goldhaar and the Goose Shepherd ). There are also works for piano, chamber music as well as songs and song cycles with piano, orchestral or chamber music accompaniment. In addition, he composed choral works that were frequently performed at the time, which, both in terms of text and in terms of melody, reveal inspiration from the folk music of his homeland.
