Hans Joachim Eggers

Hans Joachim Eggers (born July 26, 1927 in Baumholder ; † May 5, 2016 in Cologne ) was a German virologist and university professor. He was considered an important virologist in Germany and was one of the founders of research in the field of selective antiviral therapy.

Life

Eggers came from a pastor's family. After graduating from high school in Sobernheim , he studied medicine at the Universities of Cologne and Heidelberg from 1947 to 1953 . He was a doctoral student of Ernst Klenk . From 1953 to 1957 Eggers worked at the University Neurological Clinic in Cologne and during this time began to be interested in virology . From 1957 to 1959 he was a fellow of the Children's Hospital Research Foundation in Cincinnati , Ohio , with Albert Sabin . He was then a Research Associate with Frank L. Horsfall Jr. and Igor Tamm at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City . There he was assistant professor from 1961 to 1964 . In 1965 he returned to Germany with his family. From 1965 to 1966 he was department head at the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research in Tübingen . In 1966 he was offered the chair of virology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . In 1972 he moved to the newly founded chair for virology at the University of Cologne . After his retirement in 1994, Eggers was visiting professor of virology at the Institute for Molecular Virology in Madison , Wisconsin . During his scientific career he published around 200 publications.

Eggers was married and had three children, two sons and a daughter. He was a founding and later an honorary member of the Society for Virology . Since 1982 he was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Furthermore, he was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and the Academy of Non-Profit Sciences in Erfurt .

His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hallway 5 (P)).
