Hans Joachim Mendig

Hans Joachim Mendig (* 1953 in Bonn ) is a German producer of television series and feature films . One of the most famous series for which he was responsible is the crime series Ein Fall für Zwei . From 1999 to 2009 he was a board member and chairman of the board of OdeonFilm AG . From 2016 to 2019 he was the founding managing director of HessenFilm und Medien GmbH and was responsible for Hessian film funding .

Career

Hans Joachim Mendig graduated with a diploma in business administration. After an advertising agency trainee, he worked for various television broadcasters, including Hessischer Rundfunk, as program manager and editor-in-chief for films and entertainment programs. Later he was the producer and managing director of the Monaco Film Group for television films, series and series such as The Commissioner , A Case for Two , The Criminalist and The Public Prosecutor . From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the board of directors of Odeon Film AG (from 2002 chairman of the board). As a member of the board, he was also responsible for the production of various cinema films, especially for the realization of Erich Kästner's film rights.

From 1991 to 2002 he was a lecturer at the Film and Television Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg and at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences . Mendig continued his academic career at the University of Applied Sciences h_da , Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences , which awarded him an honorary professorship for film and media in 2019.

In 2010 Mendig founded Zelos Media GmbH, of which he was managing director. Zelos Media dealt with media productions and business consulting.

From 2015 to 2019, as managing director of the new HessenFilm und Medien GmbH, he was responsible for film funding for the state of Hesse .

Honorary positions

From 2015 to 2020 Mendig was a member of the committee of the German Film Institute "Filmbildung-Jetzt".

Since 2020 he has been a member of the board of trustees "Citizen and District Prize", which is awarded by the "Citizens for Frankfurt BFF" party represented in the Frankfurt City Council.

Controversy

On July 24, 2019, Mendig met Jörg Meuthen, a member of the European Parliament and federal chairman of Alternative for Germany, in Frankfurt am Main at an invitation from PR consultant Moritz Hunzinger . On the same day, Meuthen posted a photo of this encounter with the comment: “Very lively and constructive political exchange of ideas”.

Two months later, an article appeared in the Frankfurt city magazine Journal Frankfurt with the said photo. It was only this publication that generated wide attention and aroused criticism, especially from the Hessian, but also the German film industry. The meeting was also disapproved of by politicians, particularly the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen.

Due to the public controversy, the Supervisory Board of HessenFilm und Medien GmbH , chaired by the Hessian Minister for Science and Art, Angela Dorn (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen), ended Mendig's business activities in September 2019.
