Hans Kalt (rower)

Hans Kalt-Jans (born March 26, 1924 , † January 2, 2011 in Zug ) was a Swiss rower who won the Olympic silver medal in 1948 and the Olympic bronze medal in two-man without a helmsman in 1952 .

Hans Kalt started for the See-Club Zug and was trained by Karl Schmid . In the 1948 Olympic rowing regatta on the Thames near Henley , three boats competed against each other. Hans and his brother Josef Kalt won both their preliminary heat and the semi-finals before the Australian two. In the final, they met the Italians Felice Fanetti and Bruno Boni and the British John Wilson and Ran Laurie . The British won the race by almost three seconds over the Swiss, and the Italians received the bronze medal seven seconds behind.

At the European Championships in 1950, Erio Bettega and Nicolo Simone competed for Italy and proved to be the toughest competitors for Hans Kalt and his new partner Kurt Schmid . At the finish, Kalt and Schmid were ahead of the Italians and were European champions. In 1951 at the European Championships in Mâcon, the Belgians Michel Knuysen and Robert Baetens won ahead of the Danish boat, Kalt and Schmid received the bronze medal.

At the 1952 Olympic rowing regatta in Meilahti, a district of Helsinki, five boats competed against each other. Hans Kalt and Kurt Schmid won the first heat ahead of the British, Belgians and Americans. The Swiss and the British won the two semi-finals, while the Belgians, the US-Americans and the French qualified for the final via the hope runs. In the final, the four boats from the first run took the first four places. The Americans Charles Logg and Thomas Price won ahead of Michel Knuysen and Robert Baetens. Kalt and Schmid received the bronze medal, nine seconds behind the Belgians, but over four seconds ahead of the British.

Kalt was one of the founding members of the Curling Club Zug in 1966 and was made an honorary member in 2000. He was also a founding member of the Panathlon Club Zug and its honorary president.

He belonged to the guild and brotherhood of millers, bakers and confectioners of the city of Zug since 1964.

Hans and Josef Kalt worked in their father's print shop in Zug.
