Hans Karl Frey (born August 8, 1916 in Bern ; † August 9, 1974 ) was a Swiss diplomat .

Life

Frey entered the diplomatic service and was on January 1, 1946, first legation attaché and on January 1, 1948 legation secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Department of Political Affairs (now the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs ). On August 6, 1948, he moved to the embassy in Austria as a legation attaché and on January 13, 1949 to the representation in the People's Republic of Poland , where in 1949 he was also a member of the Swiss business delegation with Poland. He then worked between 1950 and 1956 in the Political Department as a legation secretary in the Commission for Nationalization Compensation, where on January 1, 1952, he also took over the post of section head. On 10 July 1956 he moved as Counselor to the Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany , where he was in 1957 temporarily also charge d'affaires ad interim during the absence of the local envoy Albert Huber . After upgrading the legation to an embassy, ​​he was appointed counselor there in 1958 .

On January 1, 1960 Frey was first class counselor in the Department of Politics and served between June 5, 1961 and November 15, 1963 as counselor at the embassy in the United States . He was then from November 15, 1963 to December 31, 1965 an advisor to the government of Rwanda . He then became Ambassador to Kenya on March 1, 1966, succeeding Roger Dürr, and held this post until August 29, 1971, when Richard Pestalozzi succeeded him. As ambassador to Kenya, he was also from 1 March 1966 to 29 August 1971 as a Swiss representative in Uganda , Tanzania , Rwanda , Burundi and Malawi accredited . During this time he represented the Federal Council as ambassador extraordinary on a special mission at the independence celebrations of Malawi and as ambassador extraordinary, special envoy and head of the delegation at the state funeral of the President of Uganda Edward Mutesa in Kampala . As ambassador to Tanzania, he was replaced on February 8, 1969 by Lucien Mossaz .

Last Frey was on 25 September 1971 as successor to André Parodi ambassador to Egypt and remained in this use until his death on August 9, 1974. At the same time he was between 25 September 1971 and August 9, 1974 in Sudan with his office accredited in Cairo . His successor as ambassador to Egypt was Daniel Gagnebin .
