Hans Kuhn (born November 29, 1824 in Pillau , † June 13, 1891 in Charlottenburg ) was a German naval officer , most recently Rear Admiral of the Navy of the North German Confederation .

Life

Kuhn joined the Prussian Navy on June 14, 1849 . Promoted to lieutenant second class, he took command of the training ship Mercur on September 22, 1853 . In 1853 he was promoted to lieutenant first class and took over command of the schooner Hela . From March 1855 to April 1856 he commanded the ship's boy company and in the summer of 1855 also became the commander of the sailing corvette Amazone . On January 12, 1856, Kuhn was promoted to corvette captain, took over the naval trunk division in Danzig and at the same time was deputy commander in chief of the naval station there . He also commanded the paddle steamer Barbarossa and temporarily continued to command the Amazon .

In 1860 Kuhn became the commander of the admiral yacht SMS Grille and then of the Radavisos Loreley , at which time he was also the commander of the gunboat division. On May 31, 1862, he was promoted to captain at sea . In 1863 he took over the sailing training ship Niobe and in spring 1864 the covered corvette Vineta . In the meantime he was briefly chief of the fleet command. As commander of a Kanonenbootflottille Kuhn took on the March 17, 1864 Loreley at the Battle of Jasmund part.

Originally to protect Prussian trade interests in the Paraguayan War that broke out in South America , Kuhn was sent to Brazil in the corvette Vineta on November 19, 1865 . The Vineta then sailed around Cape Horn, as she had been requisitioned for the Spanish-Chilean War . It then crossed the Pacific and was used against Chinese pirates off Shanghai and in the unrest before the Boshin War . She then returned to Kiel , where she arrived in October 1868. Thus Kuhn was with the Vineta the first circumnavigation managed a Prussian warship. On May 27, 1868, he was appointed rear admiral.

From October 1868 to July 1870 Kuhn was on leave for health reasons. During the Franco-Prussian War he resigned from active service. From July 19 to 28, 1870, he was initially entrusted with the management of the director's affairs in the Ministry of the Navy . He was then the representative of the director in the Ministry of the Navy, Vice Admiral Eduard von Jachmann . On April 4, 1871, Kuhn was given another leave of absence and on August 19, 1871, he was given the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring, and retired from military service with the statutory pension .
