Hans Leitner (organist)

Hans Leitner (born February 17, 1961 in Traunstein ) is a German organist , cathedral vicar , cathedral organist and monsignor at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Munich .

Life

After graduating from high school in Traunstein , Hans Leitner studied Catholic theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich as well as Catholic church music and the organ concert at the State University of Music and Theater in Munich with Franz Lehrndorfer . From 1982 to 1989 he was the permanent representative of his teacher Lehrndorfer at the Munich Cathedral. In 1988 he won the Rottenburg improvisation competition. In 1990 he was ordained a priest by Friedrich Cardinal Wetter . He then worked as a chaplain in Munich-Milbertshofen.

In 1992 he was appointed to succeed Walther R. Schuster as cathedral organist of the Passau cathedral organ and cathedral vicar at the High Cathedral of St. Stephan in Passau , where he also worked as an organ expert for the Passau diocese .

In autumn 2003, Hans Leitner was appointed to succeed Franz Lehrndorfer as cathedral organist at Munich Cathedral, where he is also cathedral vicar . From 2003 to 2011 he held a teaching position for liturgy and church music practice at the University of Music and Theater in Munich . In 2012 Hans Leitner was appointed monsignor by Pope Benedict XVI . From 2016 to 2018 he was acting head of the Munich Cathedral Music.

Hans Leitner is valued not only as an interpreter of organ music from different epochs, but also as an improviser. He is the editor of organ works as well as the author of articles on music history, organological and theological topics. Numerous CD , radio and television productions as well as compositions for organ, choir and wind instruments document his diverse artistic work.
