Hans Lyngby Jepsen (born April 1, 1920 in Aalborg ; † July 31, 2001 ) was a Danish writer who was awarded the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1967.

Life

Lyngby Jepsen, son of a geodesist , grew up in humble circumstances in Aalborg and began studying mathematics at the Polytechnic School ( Polyteknisk Læreanstalt ) in Copenhagen after visiting the monastery brands Skolen and Katedralskolen in 1939 .

He repeatedly described his personal living conditions in his literary work, which began in 1943 with short stories in the newspapers Politiken and Søndags-Magasin . After completing his studies, between 1945 and 1953 he worked as a statistician in the city engineer's office in Copenhagen City Hall . In 1945 he published his first collection of short stories entitled Kvindesind .

The style of his novels was initially shaped by a rather cumbersome tradition of realism , whereas in Rød Jord (1949) he used a more personal, impressionistic representation of the plot. Since 1953 he has been able to work full-time as a writer thanks to various grants and awards from the Emma Bærentzen, Astrid Goldschmidt, Kaptajn HC Lundgreen foundations and the Henrik Pontoppidans Mindefond.

Lyngby Jepsen, who was also chairman of the Danish Writers' Association ( Dansk Forfatterforening ) from 1957 to 1963 , was honored with the Louisiana Prize in 1960 and the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1967.

His writing style reached a further development from the 1960s, as in the biography of the Marquis de Sade of the same name and the novel Et bedre forår (1974).

In addition to travel reports on trips to Eastern Europe and Sicily, as well as children's books , he later wrote a biography of Thorvald Stauning , Denmark's first social democratic prime minister , entitled Stauning (1979) and Nordjylland (1986), a landscape representation of Northern Jutland .

He also received great recognition for his short stories, most recently Lisa og andre noveller 1953-1967 (1990).
