Hans Menzl

Hans Menzl (born May 30, 1894 in Langenwang , Styria , † December 31, 1951 in Wiener Neustadt , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).

Life

After attending primary school, Hans Menzl learned the profession of lathe operator . As a young man, Menzl lived in Eisenstadt in Burgenland , where he was involved in social democracy and rose to become party secretary of the SDAP Burgenland.

In the course of the persecution of the Social Democrats, Hans Menzl was arrested in February 1934. In April of the same year he managed to escape to Bratislava and from there to Prague . In February 1937 Menzl came to Spain , where he fought as a so-called Spanish fighter with the rank of lieutenant in the artillery . In June 1938 Menzl left Spain and came to Stockholm in November 1938 via a renewed stay in Prague . Here he was not only an employee of the Austrian Association in Sweden , but was also elected chairman of the Austrian Socialist Organization in Stockholm.

Menzl did not return to Austria until 1946, where he was elected SPÖ district party chairman for the Wiener Neustadt district that same year .

In November 1949 he became a member of the Federal Council , of which he was to remain until his death two years later.
