Hans Netter (1964)

Hans Carl Bernhard Netter (born July 13, 1899 in Meißen ; † November 8, 1977 in Eutin ) was a German physiologist and biochemist . He taught at the University of Kiel .

Life

He was the son of the doctor Carl Netter and attended grammar school in Hameln with the Abitur in 1917. After military service at the Pharmacological Institute of the University of Rostock , he studied medicine in Rostock, Göttingen, Tübingen, Hamburg and Kiel, where he passed the state examination in 1923 and 1924 at the Physiological Institute with Rudolf Höber as Dr. med. PhD ( dissertation on the influence of polyvalent cations on the alkali salt uptake of living plant cells ). In 1927 he completed his habilitation in Kiel ( on the quiescent current of the nerves and the ion permeability of its sheaths ), was a chair representative and from 1933 an adjunct professor. In 1935 he became acting head of the institute for physico-chemical medicine and in 1937 full professor for physico-chemical medicine and physiological chemistry. From 1933 he was a member of the SA and from 1937 of the NSDAP .

During the Second World War , he carried out research as a medical officer in the Air Force at the Institute for General Pharmacology and Military Toxicology at the Military Medical Academy . On May 25, 1944, he took part in a seawater conference in the Dachau concentration camp as part of the planned seawater experiments on Sinti and Roma .

After the war he rebuilt the destroyed Physiological Institute and was dean in 1952/53 . In 1968 he retired .

He dealt with the physical chemistry of membrane transport. He introduced the carrier concept and that of active transport through membranes. He measured the permeability of biological membranes and the ion distribution on both sides. He also investigated the solubility and denaturation of proteins (Hofmeister series), Donnan equilibria and the binding of oxygen and carbon dioxide to hemoglobin to clarify the Bohr effect . During the war he also dealt with nutritional physiology (biological value of proteins).

He was a skilful experimenter who further developed the glass electrode invented by Fritz Haber and used radioactive isotopes in his measurements of the ion distribution on membranes.

His book Theoretical Biochemistry from 1959 has also been translated into English.

Honors

He was a member of the Leopoldina (1959). In 1967 he received the great Federal Cross of Merit .
