Life

Johannes (Hans) Peter Karl was born as the son of Johann Georg Ferdinand and Therese Marie Henriette (née Schulz) Northmann. He attended a school in Eilbek and began his studies in March 1904 at the general trade school in Hamburg on Steintorplatz . Among other things, he took part in "decorative painting" with Willy von Beckerath during this time . In 1908 he graduated and began to work as a teacher at various trade schools in Hamburg . In 1913 he married Martha Käte Henriette Busch (1893–1980), their son Hans-Joachim was born in 1915. In the same year Northmann was drafted into military service and took part in the battles for Kovel , Riga and Villers-Brettoneux in the First World War. In 1919 he was dismissed from military service as a lieutenant in the reserve and from April 1 he was again active as a trade school teacher, and from 1920 as a civil servant. In 1920 he also joined the Hamburg Art Association .

In the 1920s and 1930s Northmann made various trips, including a. to the artist colony Schwalenberg (1928), to Bruges (1928), Spain (1931), Norway (1934), Italy (1936) and Yugoslavia (1938). From 1935 he was a member of the "Fine Arts of the Reich Chamber of Culture " and only from 1937 to 1939 a member of the NSDAP . In 1939 the son, Hans-Joachim, died of scarlet fever. In the same year Northmann was drafted into the war again in World War II and spent three winters outside Moscow since the attack on Russia until he was discharged from military service in 1944 because of an injury.

On October 31, 1945, Northmann was retired due to poor health. No incriminating facts from the time of National Socialism were known. From 1945 on there is little evidence of Northmann's life. What is certain is that, despite his partially paralyzed right hand, he continued to paint and also showed his works in exhibitions. Hans Northmann died in Hamburg in 1972. His grave is in the Hamburg cemetery Ohlsdorf .
