Hans Peter Schmitz (born May 21, 1937 in Geilenkirchen ) is a German farmer and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

After attending elementary school, Schmitz completed an agricultural training course, which he completed with an agricultural examination. He attended the agricultural college, finished it with the final exam and then started working as an independent farmer in Baesweiler . In addition, he was involved in rural youth and in the cooperative system.

Schmitz is married and has three children.

Political party

Schmitz joined the Junge Union (JU) in 1955 and was a member of the district board of the Geilenkirchen- Heinsberg JU . He joined the CDU and was elected to the CDU Rhineland regional executive committee in 1971 . Since 1986 he has been chairman of the CDU district association and the CDU district association of Aachen as well as a member of the state board of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia .

Schmitz was elected to the German Bundestag in the 1972 Bundestag election, to which he was a member until 2002. He was drafted into parliament from 1972 to 1983 and from 1987 to 2002 via the state list of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1983 to 1987 he represented the constituency of Aachen as a directly elected member .

From 1990 to 1994 he was deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group and from 1994 to 1998 chairman of the committee for the environment, nature and reactor safety. He was also a long-standing full member of the Mediation Committee and a deputy member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development and the Budget Committee .
