Hans Priebe (born June 30, 1906 in Mückenberg , † July 14, 1951 ) was a German prehistorian .

Life

Priebe was the son of a teacher and attended in Zeitz , the secondary school . Due to the hyperinflation his family became impoverished and Priebe had to drop out of school and became a carpenter . Later he was able to continue his schooling in Cottbus , where he attended the secondary school and passed the Abitur . In 1928 he began studying history and modern languages at the University of Halle , but then switched to prehistory. He worked for the State Institute for Prehistory in Halle , for the Märkisches Museum in Berlin and the State Museum in Schneidemühl . In Halle he did his doctorate on the subject of the western group of spherical amphorae . At the now renamed State Institute for Ethnology, he received an assistant position and was mainly devoted to the recording of the ground monuments . At the beginning of 1940 Priebe was called up for military service, which also meant the end of his scientific career. He fell into British captivity, from which he was released in 1949. He could not resume his previous work. Priebe died on July 14, 1951 after a serious illness.

Priebes dissertation remained his only monographic publication. It represented the most extensive collection of material on western spherical amphora culture to date and remained a standard work for 50 years until Hans-Jürgen Beier presented a new overview in 1988.
