Hans Schmid (Economist)

Hans Schmid (born August 8, 1935 in Menziken ; † April 4, 2010 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss economist and politician ( SP ).

Live and act

Schmid was full professor of economics at the University of St. Gallen from 1980 to 2000 . In 1987 he founded the Research Institute for Labor and Labor Law , of which he was director until 2000.

From 1972 to 1985 he was National Councilor (SP, SG); From 1984 to 1996 he was a member of the Federal Banking Commission and the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation .

In 1983 Hans Schmid ran for the Federal Council , but received 22 votes less than Lilian Uchtenhagen with 33 votes in the SP parliamentary group . In addition, the office of the Federal Assembly declared him ineligible because his dual citizenship in the cantons of St. Gallen and Aargau was not compatible with the St. Gallen citizenship of Federal Councilor Kurt Furgler .
