Hans Seigewasser (* 12. August 1905 in Berlin-Schöneweide , † 18 October 1979 in Rome ) was a politician of the GDR .

Life

From 1919 he became politically involved in socialist youth organizations. From 1921 to 1923 he trained as a bank clerk. During this time he first joined the USPD , in October 1922 the SPD and until 1930 became chairman of the Reich leadership of the Young Socialists . In 1931 he was one of the co-founders of the Socialist Workers' Party in Germany , but was excluded from joining the KPD in October 1932 for agitation and joined the KPD . In 1933 he became unemployed and worked illegally for the KPD, a. a. in the Rote Hilfe and in various underground newspapers. In September 1934 he was arrested in Berlin and later sentenced to five years in prison for preparation for high treason. During the Second World War he was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp until 1944 and later in Mauthausen concentration camp . There he belonged to the illegal camp leadership of the KPD and came into contact with Franz Dahlem . After the end of the war, he first became the latter's personal advisor to the KPD's central committee.

In 1946 he became a member of the SED , from 1950 he had a seat in the People's Chamber . From 1953 to 1959 he was chairman of the bureau of the Presidium of the National Council of the National Front and from 1959 to 1960 Vice-President of the National Council and chairman of the Berlin Committee of the National Front. As such, he was co-opted as a member of the SED district leadership in Berlin in April 1959.

From November 15, 1960 until his death in 1979, he succeeded Werner Eggerath as State Secretary for Church Affairs in the GDR. He died of a heart attack during the World Disarmament Meeting in Rome. His successor was Klaus Gysi . Seigewassers urn was in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the memorial of the socialists at the Berlin Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.

On May 6, 1955, Seigewasser was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver and in 1965 in gold and in 1970 with the plaque for the Patriotic Order of Merit. In 1975 he received the Karl Marx Order .
