Hans August Balthasar Strahl (born March 28, 1857 in Berlin , † March 13, 1920 in Gießen ) was a German anatomist and university professor.

Life

After graduating from high school in Marburg in 1875, Hans Strahl studied medicine for four semesters at the University of Marburg. In 1876 he became a member of the Corps Teutonia Marburg . After completing the physics course, he switched to the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen for two semesters , where he joined the Corps Franconia Tübingen in 1877 . He then returned to Marburg and passed the state examination there in the winter semester of 1879/80. In 1880 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. His academic teachers and personal supporters in Marburg were the anatomists Nathanael Lieberkühn and Guido Richard Wagener . At the beginning of 1882 he qualified as a professor for anatomy in Marburg. In 1887 he was appointed prosector at the anatomical institute and associate professor . In 1895 he became full professor of anatomy and director of the anatomical institute of the Hessian Ludwig University . From April 1, 1909 to October 1, 1910 and from October 1, 1918 to October 1, 1919, he was rector of the University of Giessen.

In his publications he dealt with the development history of reptiles as well as the construction of the embryonic envelope and the placenta. He was the first to describe many forms of placenta. He gave the different placenta forms a system by introducing a new nomenclature. There is still an extensive collection of histological sections of human and animal embryos in the Gasser- Strahl collection in the anatomical institute of the University of Marburg.
