Hans Tschani

Hans Tschäni (born June 12, 1916 in Basel , † January 15, 1999 in Wädenswil ), from Dittingen and Rüschlikon , was a Swiss journalist and publicist .

biography

Hans Tschäni grew up as the son of Arthur Tschäni (stone cutter and small farmer) and Lina, née Cueni, in a family of nine in Laufental . He attended the schools in Dittingen and Laufen from 1922 to 1932 and trained as a typesetter in Basel from 1933 to 1937 . In addition, he attended historical, literary and legal courses at the adult education center . He then worked as a bookbinder and typesetter, including at the National-Zeitung , where he made his first attempts at writing.

In 1950 he switched to journalism and from 1950 to 1953 was the sole editor of the Fricktaler Bote . From 1953 to 1960 he was the domestic editor of the Luzerner Neuesten Nachrichten and from spring 1960 to the end of June 1981 domestic editor, from April 1, 1970 as successor to Paul Künzli, domestic head of the Tages-Anzeiger . There he was instrumental in redesigning the newspaper in 1963.

Tschäni was a member of the central board of the New Helvetic Society from 1969 to 1974 . The exchange between the Swiss language regions was very important to him, including as President of the Oertli Foundation and as the first President of the literary CH series. Around 40 translations by contemporary Swiss authors in the other national languages ​​were published under his presidium. In 1979 he was awarded the newly created Swiss Book Trade Prize.

Tschäni published several reflections on Swiss politics and economy. His work Profil der Schweiz , which emerged from a 12-part citizenship course published in the Tages-Anzeiger in 1964 , was used throughout Switzerland in civics classes. After his retirement at the end of June 1981, he wrote columns on domestic political events in the Tages-Anzeiger , since the end of 1984 under the title “Political Thoughts”. Towards the end of 1991 he gave up this activity , annoyed by the dismissal of the then editor-in-chief Viktor Schlumpf, in which he saw a violation of the daily press freedom of the Tages-Anzeiger .

Tschäni had been married to Hanny Staeheli since 1946, who died shortly before him.
