Hans-Wilhelm Quitzow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Wilhelm Quitzow (born January 17, 1911 in Berlin , † December 30, 2009 in Krefeld ) was a German geologist .

Life

Hans-Wilhelm Quitzow was the son of the geologist August Alfred Wilhelm Quitzow and grandson of the geologist Konrad Keilhack . Quitzow studied geology, chemistry , mineralogy and botany in Berlin, Munich and Göttingen . In 1934 he received his doctorate. phil. with a dissertation on the topic: "The Calabrian Massif before, during and after the Alpidic folding."

From 1934 to 1936 he worked at the Geological-Paleontological Institute and Museum of the University of Berlin. From 1937 Quitzow began his career in the geological civil service at the Prussian Geological State Institute in Berlin. From 1949 until his retirement in 1976 he worked for the "Geological Service" (formerly "Geological State Office") in Krefeld . In 1974, Hans Wilhelm Quitzow took over the chairmanship of the Krefeld Natural Science Association, which was founded in 1858, but at that time it got into a dissolution discussion due to a lack of membership. Under his chairmanship, which he held until 1994, the Natural Science Association experienced an upswing in membership, events and publications. The members elected Quitzow in 1994 at the annual general meeting as the first honorary chairman in the club's history.

In 1979 he received the Rheinlandtaler , an award from the Rhineland Regional Council. In 1996 he was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
