Hans Wilhelm Freiherr von Thümmel (born February 17, 1744 in Schönefeld near Leipzig , † 1824 in Altenburg ) was a privy councilor , minister and diplomat in Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg .

Life

He was born the son of an electoral councilor. His mother came from the von Bölau family . After studying at Leipzig University, which he had to break off prematurely, he became a page in 1760 with the Duchess Luise Dorothea of ​​Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg . In 1765 he was promoted to chamberlain.

In 1771 he got a job as an assessor at the Chamber of Commerce in Gotha . There he built the Prinzenpalais , one of the earliest classicist buildings in Germany , in 1776 for the youngest son Luise Dorotheas, Prince August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg .

In 1783, Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , whom Hanns von Thümmel had been close to at an early age, headed the Altenburg Chamber and later made him head of the senior tax committee . Thümmel was then significantly involved in the establishment of the rafting on the Pleiße , in the establishment (1792) of the chamber loan bank and in the construction of the Chausseebau . After he left in 1817, Hans Wilhelm von Thümmel lived mostly in Nöbdenitz . He belonged to the circle of Duchess Dorothea von Kurland in Löbichau . During the winter months, the Thümmel family and their daughters Clementine and Constanze often came to the famous Berlin salons.

Von Thümmel died in Altenburg in 1824. He had previously ordered to be buried in an old hollow oak in Nobdenitz. His grave in the Thümmeleiche named after him still exists today.

From a scientific point of view, von Thümmel became known through the "Topographical Map of the Offices Altenburg and Ronneburg" published in 1813 , actually a map of a large number of maps, and through his "historical, statistical, geographical and topographical contributions to the knowledge of the Duchy of Altenburg" .
