Hans Zahrtmann
Hans Zahrtmann (born March 13, 1849 in Rønne ; † November 27, 1930 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish engineer, especially in the construction and expansion of ports in many places in Denmark. The existence of safe harbors was a basic requirement for the island population living off the sea, which significantly influenced the decision in favor of port expansion.
family
Zahrtmann was the fourth son of Carl Vilhelm Zahrtmann (1810–1899) and Laurine Pouline, b. Jespersen (1822-1918) and daughter of the owner of Harrisgaard Hans Christian Hansen and wife Hermandine Dorothea Sonne. He was baptized on April 29, 1849 in St. Nicolai Church . He had eight siblings: Kristian , Carl Vilhelm (1845–1859), Conrad Heinrich Donner (engineer, 1847–1923), Peder Tetens (1851–1898), Hermann Peter Bohn (* 1857), Marius Kofoed (1861–1940), Bodil Kirstine (1866–1941) and Sophie Elisabeth (1853–1890).
On December 21, 1881, at the age of 31, he married Johanne Dorthea Hansen (* 1855) in Rönne. Because the couple had no children of their own, they adopted Laura Mathilda, née Gulfeldt, who was born on October 16, 1889 in Havrevænge near Odense .
education and profession
After graduating from school, Hans Zahrtmann went to the polytechnic university in Schleswig from 1865 , but soon gave up scientific training in order to obtain a practice-oriented degree. He then traveled to large parts of Europe as a carpenter and settled in 1875 as a port engineer on his home island Bornholm . From 1878 to 1893 he lived in Nexø, where he was elected to the city council in 1885. Zahrtmann designed numerous Danish port facilities, for example in Snogebæk on the west coast of Bornholm in April 1890, which was also reported by Vendsyssel Tidende .
He is also responsible for numerous other public buildings, such as the Nexø schoolhouse in 1883. From 1893 he lived in Copenhagen . In 1892 he led the expansion of the port of Nexø and worked hard to expand other port facilities in Bornholm. This gave the fishing port a special meaning. The ports of Klintholm on Møn and Ballen on Samsø also go back to his planning .
Honor
Zahrtmann died in Copenhagen and was buried on December 4, 1930. His birthplace Rönne honors him by naming a street and a roundabout. The southern bypass road was supposed to be built in 1935, but was only completed - in stages - in 1945, the roundabout probably five years later.
