Hans Freiherr von Falkenstein (born September 12, 1893 in Dresden , † October 30, 1980 in Hanover ) was a German officer, most recently general of the infantry and division commander.

Life

Born as the son of the Saxon Major General Julius Freiherr von Falkenstein, Hans von Falkenstein joined the Royal Saxon 1st (Body) Grenadier Regiment No. 100 as a flag junior in 1912 and became an ensign on November 12, 1912 and an ensign on August 14, 1913 promoted to lieutenant. In August 1914 he entered the First World War with the Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 100 . On August 21, 1914, he was appointed orderly officer at the headquarters of the 45th Reserve Infantry Brigade. He returned to his previous unit on May 6, 1915, and became company commander on April 8, 1918. On August 30, 1918, he was taken prisoner by the British, from which he was released on October 26, 1919.

After his return he was returned to his old unit and assigned to the winding-up office in the Saxon War Ministry. On November 28, 1919, he was promoted to first lieutenant and on April 1, 1920, was transferred to the 23rd Infantry Regiment . On October 1, 1921, he came to the 10th Cavalry Regiment and was assigned to the staff of the 4th Division to train as a guide assistant . Returned to his unit on October 1, 1923, he was transferred to the Reichswehr Ministry on October 1, 1926 , where he was promoted to captain on April 1, 1927. On October 1, 1927, he became chief of the 8th Company of Infantry Regiment 10 and was posted to the 12th Cavalry Regiment from June 8 to September 30, 1927 . On February 1, 1932, he was assigned to the Department PA-P2 (Heerespersonalamt-Heeres-Personalabteilung 2) of the Reichswehr Ministry and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on April 1, 1937 .

On October 12, 1937 he was commander of MG Battalion 7 and on January 10, 1940, commander of the 103rd Infantry Regiment of the 24th Infantry Division . Promoted to colonel on April 1, 1940, he received on 20 December 1941, the appointment as commander of the 14th Rifle Brigade at the 14th Panzer Division , which he led until 8 November 1,942th From November 1st to November 16th he was acting commander of the 14th Panzer Division. Subsequently, he was transferred to the leader reserve and assigned to a division leader course. After its completion he came to Army Group Center and received on February 22, 1943 the order to lead the 707th Infantry Division . From April 25, 1943, as the successor to Fritz Kühlwein , he led the 45th Infantry Division until November 30, and was promoted to major general in this position on May 1. Promoted to lieutenant general on November 1, 1943 Hans Freiherr von Falkenstein was restored to the leaders Reserve on 1 December 1943 and from 24 February 1945, he then commanded the 24th Infantry Division . On June 1, 1944, he was transferred to the Führerreserve again, and on August 1, 1944, he was appointed military replacement inspector in Dresden.
