Hans Ritter von Petersen (born February 24, 1850 in Husum , † June 18, 1914 in Munich ) was a German marine painter .

Life

Petersen received his artistic training at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . After that he lived and worked in Munich. In 1896 Petersen received a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin . From 1901 he was president of the Munich artists' cooperative and head of the Glaspalast exhibitions. In 1901, Prince Regent Luitpold Petersen rose to the personal nobility. Petersen was married to Clara Wuth (* May 18, 1852, † January 14, 1923). The marriage remained childless. Petersen committed suicide under the impression of depression and impending blindness.

Petersen prepared his paintings through sea voyages. In doing so, he acquired important detailed knowledge. Petersen worked as a draftsman for the Illustrirte Zeitung on the West African coast in 1884 . In 1885 he worked with the painter Louis Braun for the first time on one of the then very popular circular paintings entitled “Panorama of German Colonies” . From 1897 Petersen was constantly represented at the art exhibitions of the Glaspalast in Munich.

With his paintings of ships and naval battles, Hans von Petersen primarily addressed interested parties in southern Germany. His paintings and panoramas contributed to the enthusiasm for the fleet under Kaiser Wilhelm II . Petersen's landscape paintings were considered less popular.
