Life

Stibichhofen Castle

Hans von Rebenburg's grandfather was Johann Nepomuk Haendl von Rebenburg. He was the owner of the Ober-Lichtenwald estate in the Savetal in Slovenia (then Lower Styria). He was knighted in 1823 for his services to the school system. He had a park and a vineyard laid out for the Ober-Lichtenwald Castle, which he acquired in 1802. This is where its nobility name “Rebenburg” came from. Another son of Johann Nepomuk von Rebenburg was Anton von Rebenburg, a major of the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger and brother-in-law of Archduke Johann , as he was married to Anna Plochl's sister Luise. His mother's ancestors had been successful as entrepreneurs in the iron industry for many generations. Among other things, they owned the wheel works number IX in Vordernberg.

Rebenburg Vordernberg trade union

Hans von Rebenburg was the son of Ludwig von Rebenburg (1806–1877) and Katharina Schragl (1807–1862). In 1856 he married Anna from the Seßler family. The marriage remained childless. After his mother's death in 1862, he inherited Radwerk IX and the Schragl property. In the same year, Hans von Rebenburg acquired Stibichhofen Castle in Trofaiach, including around 12 hectares of meadow, which was his main residence for the next few decades. In 1871 he sold Radwerk IX, but kept the 780 hectare Ramsbachhube self-hunt in Gößgraben (municipality of Trofaiach) . He sold this hunting ground in 1906 to the Viennese coal wholesaler Rudolf von Gutmann . The trade house of Radwerk IX, which still exists in Vordernberg today, is still called "Rebenburg". The large wheelwork buildings that originally belonged to it were demolished, the rest of them in 1975.

Upper Lichtenwald Castle - Sevnica

Rebenburg operates in the highest circles. The Laibacher Zeitung of March 17, 1829 reported: “Yesterday His Imperial Highness the most serene Archduke Johann von Cilli arrived here. The Lord of Ober-Lichtenwald Johann Haendl von Rebenburg drove a part of the way to meet the high-ranking guest and then led his Imperial Highness to his castle in Ober-Lichtenwald, where everything was already prepared for the solemn reception of Höchst. The next day his Imperial Highness went to Rann to consult with the members of the Steyermärkische Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft residing here about some agricultural issues. “When Emperor Franz Joseph I went on a hunting holiday in Radmer , he often had noble guests from the Environment invited to a drive hunt. Hans von Rebenburg was often present among those invited.

Villa Rebenburg am Grundlsee

Hans von Rebenburg was also the owner of a villa in Archkogl am Grundlsee , which he had built on its bank in 1869. Years later, around 1930, Sigmund Freud and his family often vacationed in this villa . This Villa Rebenburg still exists today, it was renovated and rebuilt and contains apartments.

Hans von Rebenburg was an honorary citizen of the communities Trofaiach, Gai and Bad Aussee . He has often shown himself to be a generous donor on various occasions.

Hans von Rebenburg died on February 24, 1917.

On the ground floor of Stibichhofen Castle there is an inscription with the text “Patience uberberwindet alles”. There is an identical inscription on the Sevnica Castle / Ober Lichtenwald in the Savetal, which is an indication that the inscription in Trofaiach comes from the Rebenburg family. The Trofaiacher Rebenburgasse is named after Hans von Rebenburg.

After Hans von Rebenburg, Alexander Johann Kyd-Rebenburg (July 16, 1888 - November 29, 1964), the descendant of a sister of Hans von Rebenburg, became the new owner of Stibichhofen. Alexander Kyd-Rebenburg sold Stibichhofen Castle to the Evangelical Parish on October 23, 1953. On May 6, 1954, the Protestant parish hall in Trofaiach was officially opened. The independent Evangelical Parish Trofaiach has existed since April 9, 1955. The castle serves the Protestant parish as a castle church, parish office and youth hostel. The Trofaiach City Museum has also been housed on the ground floor of Stibichhofen Castle since 1976.
