The Hansaline , Pacific Queen since 2003 , is a former butter ship that now operates in Panama . In contrast to other ships of this size, she was not loaded for the transfer, but instead drove to her new location on her own keel.

history

Hansaline

The Hansaline was built by Lindstøls Skibs & Båtbyg in Risør in Norway and was given hull number 266. On July 1, 1968, the ship was delivered to the shipping company Hansa Linien A / S in Sønderborg , Denmark . It was initially used on the Sønderborg - Gelting - Flensburg - Kollund route or between Flensburg and Gråsten . In 1976 it became the property of the Scholte & Co. KG leisure center in Bremen . From 1981 it belonged to La Ubitur SA & Abagodos Panamenos SA in Panama and was used in the ferry service from Piraeus . In 1985 the ship was chartered to Viking Båtarna and shuttled between Malmö and Copenhagen , in 1986 it was first chartered to EH Rasmussen GmbH in Flensburg and then sold. The ship was registered for Viking Co. Shipping Ltd., Panama. In the 1990s, the Hansaline was chartered to the Viking Reederei Personenschiffahrt (Jordt & Petersen) in Flensburg and used between Flensburg and Kollund.

Pacific Queen

After being sold to Panama Marine Adventure, the ship was renamed Pacific Queen in 2003 . It was rebuilt at the Friedrichswerft in Kiel , transferred to Panama and henceforth used on the Panama Canal .

The sale to Panama took place after the ship was no longer approved by the TÜV for German sea traffic. During the renovation in Kiel, the lower saloon windows of the ferry were welded and the saloon was converted into a dormitory. For the transfer tour to Panama, the ship took an additional 32,000 liters of diesel on board. The trip to Panama took 42 days and did not go smoothly. The ship was already caught in a thunderstorm on the North Sea , and the control unit had to be repaired in England. The ship was then stuck in the port of Las Palmas for two weeks because the new owners did not pay the port fee on time. After that there were problems with the high Caribbean temperatures. After the transfer, the captain of the ship is said to have replied to the question of whether he would make such a voyage again: “Nope, that's enough! You only do that once in a lifetime! "

As the Pacific Queen , the ship is used once a month for a trip through the entire Panama Canal. Cruises through part of the canal from Isla Flamenco are offered every Saturday. The ship has two closed decks and a partially covered sun deck.
