Haplochromis sauvagei ( synonym : Ptyochromis sauvagei ) is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria in East Africa. It was in 1896 by the German zoologist Georg Johann Pfeffer as Ctenochromis sauvagei described and named in honor of the French ichthyologist and herpetologist Henri-Émile Sauvage named (1842-1917). In the aquarium hobby the species was long known as Haplochromis sp. "Rock kribensis" was known and was considered undescribed until Lothar Seegers, an author of specialist aquarium books, Haplochromis sp. "rock kribensis"identifiedas Haplochromis sauvagei .

features

Haplochromis sauvagei has a typical Haplochromis shape with a beefy head and a large mouth. The males of the species are 10.5 to 14 cm long, the females reach a body length of 8 to 10 cm. Young fish, females and inferior males are lemon yellow with two blackish longitudinal and 6 to 7 vertical stripes on the sides of the body. The dominant males in the Tanzanian Mwanza Gulf show a very conspicuous carmine-red color with a golden-yellow basic color towards the belly and throat, the dominant males on the Ugandan coast ( Haplochromis sp. "Uganda Rock kribensis") are light blue. The males also show the two longitudinal bars, the cross bars are less clear.

Way of life

Haplochromis sauvagei lives close to the coast in the rock zone and above rocky ground. It feeds on aquatic snails, insect larvae, especially those of the mayfly Povilla adusta , copepods , diatoms and detritus . Like all Haplochromis species, it is a mouthbrooder . After 18 to 20 days, the females release up to 30 fry.

Systematics

The species was first scientifically described in 1896 by the German zoologist Georg Johann Pfeffer , under the name Ctenochromis sauvagei . Later she came to Haplochromis . The British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood made the way in 1980 for the type species , introduced by him genus Ptyochromis ( Gr : "ptyo" - "spit" of mollusc shells.) To the mainly-feeding of water snails Haplochromis types, and thus also should include Haplochromis prodromus , Haplochromis granti and Haplochromis xenognathus . The split of Haplochromis was rejected by other scientists. Seegers however considers Ptyochromis to be a valid subgenus of Haplochromis .

Danger

The IUCN classifies the species as endangered ("Vulnerable"). It was found in all areas of the lake, but the population declined dramatically after the Nile perch ( Lates niloticus ), a very large predatory fish, was introduced into Lake Victoria. In contrast to other cichlid species, Haplochromis sauvagei has not yet died out, but can only be found in a few areas. The greatest current threat to the species is the possible hybridization with other, closely related species ( e.g. with Haplochromis nyererei ), as the reduced depth of view of the water due to increasing water pollution makes it difficult to recognize the species and to choose the right sexual partner.
