The Happy Buccaneer is a Dutch heavy lift carrier and was the most powerful ship of its kind from its construction in 1984 to 2004.
history
The ship was built in 1983/84 at the Japanese shipyard Hitachi Shipbuilding in Osaka. The ship is mainly used in global heavy lift and project voyages. The ship is of particular importance in terms of shipbuilding as a development step towards the construction of the first container ships without hatch covers . Apart from its function as a dock and heavy lift ship, it was, strictly speaking, the first ship with no hatch cover, the dimensions of which were optimized for the transport of containers.
technology
During construction, the equipment consisted of two Huismans cranes attached to the starboard side with a lifting capacity of 550 tons per crane with a reach of 28 meters. In the summer of 2006, both cranes were brought to a capacity of 700 tons each during an extended period in the shipyard, and other performance parameters were also increased.
The 110.50 m long and 20.60 meters wide, partly boxy cargo area with a capacity of 19,908 m 3 (grain space) for the transport of containers and heavy reinforced and has numerous removable Scots , also known as steerage can be used. Pontoon hatch covers were used that can be removed separately from the ship. Aft is a Ro-Ro ramp that opens up the loading space completely and can be used to roll in heavy goods.
The Happy Buccaneer is powered by two Hitachi diesel engines built under a Sulzer license , which act on a variable-pitch propeller via a reduction gear . Each of the two main engines has an output of 3840 kilowatts.
The ice-reinforced hull was assembled using a sectional construction.
