Happy the Man is the debut album by the American progressive rock band Happy the Man . It was released on Arista Records in 1977 .
Creation and publication
After a demo in 1975, some airplay on Georgetown University radio and rehearsals with Peter Gabriel , who was looking for a backing band, Happy the Man got a contract with Arista Records. At the end of 1976 they were able to win over the well-known producer Ken Scott to record their self-titled debut album. The band was finally sent on tour by their label with Renaissance , Foreigner , Hot Tuna and Stomu Yamashta in 1977 .

Happy the Man play varied and mostly instrumental Progressive Rock with complex structures and playful arrangements, with virtuoso solos and hymn-melodic passages. In places there are echoes of the Canterbury sound .

Happy the Man is now considered a classic of American progressive rock, even if the vocal passages are sometimes criticized. Udo Gerhards from Babyblauen Seiten praises it as a "great album [...] by a band with an absolutely unique sound: varied, complex, but eminently entertaining". The eclipsed magazine took the album on its list of the 150 best prog albums.
