The art historian Karin Zangerl describes him as a painter who has developed an unmistakable artistic identity.

“The spontaneity of his painting style testifies to the expressive character of his pictures. The virtuoso handling of light, on the other hand, is undoubtedly reminiscent of Austrian mood impressionism . Like the international impressionists, Birklhuber also proceeds directly from the impressions of nature and the momentary nature of the figures and objects. He always remains committed to representationalism without actually depicting. "

In doing so, according to the art historian Eva-Maria Manner, he plays with the coloring , expands the usual color palette and elevates the “ordinary” to the subject in his works.

For him it is about the - first for himself - successful picture. He does not find this in the correspondence of the representation with reality, but in the correspondence of the painted with what he feels.
