Harald G. Schweim

Harald G. Schweim (born August 18, 1950 in Elmshorn ) is a German pharmacist . Since December 2004 he has been Professor of “ Drug Regulatory Affairs ” at the University of Bonn , Pharmacy Department, and deals, among other things, with drug counterfeiting.

Initial and continuing education

Harald Schweim completed his community service in a university hospital pharmacy after a two-year pharmacy internship (at that time the first phase of pharmacist training). After a few semesters he studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg, food chemistry and pharmacy . There he received his doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1981 and qualified as a professor in the same subject in 1989. This was followed by part-time training to become a medical IT specialist (1999), specialist pharmacist for drug information (1999) and specialist pharmacist for public health (2001).

Professional background

As a private lecturer or associate professor , Schweim taught at the University of Hamburg (1989), at the Free University of Berlin (1992) and at the University of Bonn (1999). Until 1992 he worked as a scientist at the University of Hamburg.

From 1992 Harald Schweim headed the “Drug Approval” department in the Institute for Drugs (AMI) of the Federal Health Office (BGA) in Berlin and from 1994 the “Drug Approval” department in the newly founded Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). In 1996 he was appointed head of the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI, Cologne). He took over the management of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM, Bonn) as President from 2000 (with simultaneous provisional management of DIMDI until June 2002) to 2004. In March 2004, he was appointed to the then Federal Ministry of Health for six months as “Commissioner for international questions of pharmaceutical quality ”.

In December 2004 he was appointed university professor for "Drug Regulatory Affairs" at the University of Bonn. In addition to building up the "Master of Drug Regulatory Affairs" course, Schweim observes developments in German health policy. He is of the opinion that the legal release of the mail order business for pharmaceuticals has led to an increasing spread of counterfeit medicines.
