Harald Hjärne

Harald Gabriel Hjärne (born May 2, 1848 in Klastorp , † January 6, 1922 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish historian.

Hjärne began his studies at Uppsala University in 1865 . After graduating as Dr. phil. he became a lecturer in history in 1872. After an intzermezzo as a teacher in Gothenburg, he returned to Uppsala in 1876 as a lecturer. In 1885 he became an associate professor and from 1889 until his retirement in 1913 he was a full professor.

He was also a member of the second chamber of the Reichstag from 1902 to 1908 and the first chamber from 1912 to 1918, where he joined the conservative framstegspartiet .

Hjärne began studying Swedish history, especially the 16th and 17th centuries, which he was particularly interested in. He praised King Gustav II Adolf in a text that was also translated into German as the “savior of Protestantism”. Another focus was the history of Russia.

In 1880 Hjärne was included in the Kungliga Samfundet för utgivande av handskrifter rörande Scandinaviens historia , in 1889 in the Humanistiska vetenskapssamfundet i Uppsala , in 1899 in the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies , 1901 in the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala and the Kungliga Vittenskitter i Uppsala Gothenburg and in 1905 admitted to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , plus several foreign academies and learned societies. From 1903 until his death he was a member of the Swedish Academy (chair 10).
