After studying painting and dealing with traditional color materials, Schmitz-Schmelzer began to work more and more with lacquers and plastics in the 1970s and to experiment with various image carrier formats such as steles and circular shapes.

The resulting difficulty in precisely defining and categorizing Schmitz-Schmitzer's objects was already recorded by Professor Reinhard Hoeps in 1981 in the description of one of Schmitz-Schmelzer's installations at the time: “[the work] opens up a gap between image and sculpture” and “This The interplay of space and painting in the exchange of dimensionalities implies their mutual influence, which is present in every picture. "

This hybridity of the work continued. His “color space bodies” or “mural objects” were created from synthetic resin dyed with pigment and poured onto a wooden carrier, which was then polished to a high gloss by grinding and polishing. "Towards the wall, a piece of wood of different widths serves as a picture carrier and the wood can [...] develop a strong dynamic of its own."
