Harald W. Krenn (born October 19, 1958 in Vienna ) is an Austrian biologist and professor of integrative zoology at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna .

Professional background

Harald W. Krenn studied biology and earth sciences as well as zoology and botany at the University of Vienna from 1977 to 1987 . His dissertation was entitled Comparative functional analysis of the trunk of the Lepidoptera . He completed a teaching degree in biology and environmental studies and completed his studies with a doctorate in zoology and botany in 1987. After working as a biology teacher and as a product manager in the pharmaceutical industry, Krenn became an assistant professor at the University of Zoology in 1993 Vienna. After his habilitationIn 2001 he became an assistant professor in the Department of Evolutionary Biology in the same year, then from 2012 in the Department of Integrative Zoology. Since 2012, Krenn has been head of the study programs in biology at the University of Vienna.

Research priorities

Krenn's research interests are primarily the form, function and convergent evolution of the mouthparts in insects . The examination of the mouthparts of insects contributed to the understanding of the functional mechanism of the proboscis of butterflies (Lepidoptera) and made the evolution of the individual structures comprehensible in their new form-function context. The investigation of the proboscis in butterflies yielded amazing examples of adaptations to different liquid foods (e.g. nectar , fruit juices, tree sap, excrement ) as well as adaptations to the use of pollen as additional food in Heliconius species, a group of Neotropical butterflies . An extremely long proboscis occurs within different groups of flower visitors, but is relatively rare. The current research is for the first time comparing the costs and benefits of these conspicuous suction organs, including the suction pump organs in different insects. In a group of Lepidoptera, a novel organ on the mouthparts that is not homologous to any organ in related taxa was examined in detail . It occurs only in female yuccamoths and is used to pollinate the larvae 's forage plant .

Practical research

Harald W. Krenn's research combines experimental field work (e.g. in Costa Rica at the La Gamba tropical station ) with morphological and experimental studies at the University of Vienna.
