The Haramukh (also Harmukh ) is a mountain in the western Himalayas in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
The 5142 m high glaciated mountain is located in the Ganderbal district - 40 km north of the town of Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley . The Nanga Parbat massif is almost 100 km north-northwest. The Kolahoi ( 5425 m ) is 47.5 km southeast. Haramukh lies between the river valleys of Sind in the south and Nilam ( Kishen Ganga ) in the north. On the northern flank of the mountain is the small lake Gangbal Lake .
The Haramukh is considered a holy mountain for Hindus .
The British geodesist and officer Thomas George Montgomerie used the 4875 m high western summit of Haramukh to measure the mountains in the Karakoram .
