The native Martha Schömig was the daughter of the builder Rudolf Schömig and his wife Emilie Mathilde geb. Passetzky. In Vienna she attended the Lyceum .

Her career as an actress began after her marriage to the director and later film producer Karl Hartl on February 2, 1930. She took acting lessons with Margit von Tolnai and at the Max Reinhardt Seminar . At the age of 30 she made her debut at the Kammerspiele of the Theater in der Josefstadt . This was followed by several years at German theaters, where she was also discovered for film.

As the wife of the head of Wien-Film , Karl Hartl, entering the film business was made easy for her. In Géza von Bolváry's Opera Ball , she was able to begin with the female lead. Further leading roles in successful Vienna films such as Rosen in Tirol , Wiener G'schichten , Schrammeln followed. She almost always played the type of strong woman who dictated the event. She was rarely able to hide her Viennese accent. The role of the Fiaker-Milli in Schrammeln was her prime role . In 1985 she received the gold film tape for many years of outstanding work in German film.

She rests at the Hietzinger Friedhof (group 65, number 2) in Vienna, at her husband's side. In 2000, Marte-Harell-Gasse in Vienna- Liesing was named after her.
